GORILLAS AND PRIMATES

Gorillas And Primates: 8 Days Itinerary

  • Day 1 – ARRIVAL – KIGALI

Meet on arrival at the airport. Transfer to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

  • Day 2 – KIGALI – HUYE – NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast, we follow the road as it climbs and descends some of the thousand hills, with spectacular views all along the way. Arrive at Huye, visit the National Museum—a must for those interested in African history. Time permitting, tour the remarkable arboretum and continue toward the Nyungwe forest.

  • Day 3 – NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK – CHIMPANZEES AND COLOBUS MONKEYS

Covering 970 km², the highlands provide unique habitat for thirteen species of primates, including chimpanzees, l’Hoest, and owl-faced monkeys. Walking under the canopy of majestic trees, you may encounter semi-wild colobus monkeys feeding on wild figs and jumping from branch to branch. This high-altitude jungle floor is also home to some of the world's most beautiful orchids.

  • Day 4 – LAKE KIVU

En route to Karongi, enjoy fantastic views over Lake Kivu and its rugged shoreline. Experience the peaceful atmosphere of the calm and pristine waters of Africa’s highest lake from the terrace of your hotel.

  • Day 5 – LAKE AND HILLS

After a refreshing early morning swim and a hearty breakfast, continue north along the lakeshore. Enjoy opportunities for shopping and meeting villagers at colorful marketplaces. Stop at a large tea plantation.

Optional Activity: Take a private boat trip from Karongi to Rubavu (approximately 3 hours).

  • Day 6 – MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

At dawn, as mist clings to the summits of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura, venture into Volcanoes National Park. Tracking gorillas through unique vegetation can take several hours of challenging walking in wet and muddy conditions, but the reward of seeing a gorilla in its natural habitat makes it worth the effort.

  • Day 7 – VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK – OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Options include a second gorilla trek, visiting a habituated group of Golden Monkeys endemic to the Virungas, or exploring the Karisoke Research Centre built by Dian Fossey (and her grave located between the Karisimbi and Bisoke Volcanoes). Alternatively, you can climb the Bisoke Volcano with its superb crater lake or tour the shores of the small Ruhondo and Bulera lakes before returning to your hotel.

  • Day 8 – KIGALI – DEPARTURE

Drive to Kigali and explore the city highlights before transferring to the airport for departure.

This 8-day itinerary offers a unique blend of wildlife adventures, cultural experiences, and breathtaking landscapes, making it a perfect journey for nature and primate enthusiasts.
